The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.

Calls for Applications
Economic Experimentation Guest Researcher Programme

The Department of Anthropology of Economic Experimentation invites applications from scholars and practitioners in all fields to join us as guest researchers to develop a “common concerns” approach in anthropology.

The common concerns approach identifies research questions by recognizing the concerns that our interlocutors are grappling with in their own lives, such as uncertainty about the future, feelings of powerlessness (often despite material abundance), and increasing pressure in education, work and family formation. Conceptualized as the subjective experience of objective socio-economic contradictions, common concerns lead us to deeper theorization and stronger public engagement.

Our Offer
As a successful candidate, you will be invited to visit our institute in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) for between one and six months. During your stay, you will be expected to participate in our collaborative project by theorizing a particular concern (e.g. suspension, pressure, or social repair) across cases, articulating a concern based on your own research data, and reflecting on the theories and methods needed to further develop the common concerns approach.

We will provide you with a workspace and grant you access to the facilities and the library at the MPI. Visiting researchers are expected to be self-funded; however, additional financial support from the institute may be available, and will be decided on an individual basis.
